Student Grievance Process

STUDENT GRIEVANCE PROCESS

Defense Information School, 6500 Mapes Road, Fort Meade, Maryland 20755-5620

For all non-school related issues:  Students should use their military chain of command through their service’s detachment leadership.

For decisions related to student elimination or recycling:  Students must follow the established appeal process outlined in the DINFOS Information Guide (DIG), to formally elevate their concerns to the command sergeant major (for enlisted) or to the deputy commandant (for officers and civilians).

For all other schoolhouse related issues:  Students should follow the process described below:

Most student complaints/grievances can be resolved informally by discussing the matter with the course lead instructor, who may consult with the academic director, department NCOIC, and the department head for guidance.

If a student's complaint cannot be resolved informally by working with the course lead instructor and/or department leadership, the student may submit a written description of the issue, along with supporting documentation (if applicable) to the appropriate training directorate leadership (PACS or DOT). Students are also welcome to submit comments to the Commandant's Suggestion Program in the boxes located in the building.

DINFOS will examine the submission and provide an appropriate response and a written description of the resolution.

If the response is not satisfactory to the student, s/he may request DINFOS forward the submission to the next higher authority, the command sergeant major (CSM) (for enlisted) or the deputy commandant (for officers and civilians) for review and/or possible investigation.

The CSM or deputy commandant will examine the submission and provide an appropriate response and a written description of the resolution. All decisions by the CSM or the deputy commandant are final.

While the appeals and grievance decisions of the school are final, students may inform our accrediting agency, the Council on Occupational Education (COE), at the address below if they feel their issues are not satisfactorily resolved:
