This month, Navy Lt. Chelsea Irish, Public Affairs and Communication Strategy Directorate Instructor, served as a Public Affairs evaluator on a Senior Project panel at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va. She evaluated the final presentation of a senior who expressed strong interest in Navy Public Affairs and completed a project on journalism and photography. “It was professionally rewarding to mentor an aspiring Navy Public Affairs Officer through her senior project,” Irish said. “Watching her present her increased knowledge and understanding of the Public Affairs community with her Wakefield High School peers and teachers was meaningful and memorable.” Irish evaluated the student as she shared her Navy career aspirations with her peers and teachers. This unique practice allows students to use the same information and imagery to each create a piece they feel best reflects their concept. In this way, they can also see how their fsllow students package the same information. In this example by Seaman Joseph C. Vazquez, Hannah Lagno, a chief pilot and mechanic at Kent Aero, describes how aviation has been a part of her life since childhood. Her father, Fred Lagno, is an Air Force veteran and used to take her flying even when she was an infant. Lagno was pursuing a career in music, but returned to her first love, flying in 2014. McCreary Junior Public Affairs Alumni Award by San Diego State University’s School of Journalism & Media Studies. The award honors junior public affairs alumni who integrate the strategic planning skills learned at SDSU into their fleet work after graduation. “Skye has been crushing it since she returned to the fleet,” said Kaye Sweetser, PHD. Day one (of 15) for the latest DINFOS Instructor Training Course (ITC). There’s a lot of energy, passion and team building that goes into the first few days. Training for new instructors ramps up quickly, focusing on the basics of developing lesson plans, creating an active learning environment, and delivering content in an engaging way. The course, overseen by the Faculty Training and Development Office, is just the beginning of learning for DINFOS’ instructors. Team mentors, in-house seminars and FTDO programs such as the revamped Master Instructor program all provide avenues toward improved effectiveness in the classroom.
